Spyware Causes a Slower PC?

Spyware is a very well known aggressor against a Personal Computer. As its name implies, it is software that invades one’s computer and monitors activity and information. It installs itself on a computer and brings various risks and problems to the PC. Among other things, it can slow a computer as well as risk its security and that of its user. There are many forms of syware and it does more than simple spying. Protecting one’s computer against this software is critical to a safe and efficient use of one’s computer.

Spyware invades computers is several ways. It is normally talked about in very similar light to a computer virus. There are differences however between them. For one, spyware does not normally transmit itself from computer to computer. Either it lures the user in by offering them a free software from the internet, either for music download, internet gaming or other such thing. Once the free software is downloaded, the spyware installs along with it. Spyware takes up space on a computer’s disk and takes away from the CPU usage of that computer. By doing so, it slows the computer. It also has a tendency to bring other software with it, further slowing the system. Many times this slowing is not linked to spyware, as it is so well hidden in the computer’s memory.

The spyware normally shows pop-up advertisements on the infected computer. This is one of the main reasons it was designed and still in use today. Advertisers find these captive audience advertisements useful and will buy space on these spyware ads. This form of spyware is a mere annoyance, but there are others much worse. For example, in several instances in the past, spyware has been reported to monitor bank information, internet passwords and other private data. This allows a skillful computer hacker to use that information to steal the identity of the user of the infected computer.

So beyond the fact that it slows the computer, it should be blocked for other reasons as well. A simple way to do this is to make use of the firewall already installed on the operating system. Some forms of spyware can be placed onto a computer without piggybacking on downloaded software. A firewall can help prevent this from occurring by protecting the computer against outside intrusion. Firewalls come with operating systems and automatically activate. Of course, one needs to make sure the firewall is updated in order to protect against new forms of intrusion. Having an outdated firewall is sometimes as bad as not even having one.

There are many programs available either by buying the copies in a computer store or online to fight against spyware. Because of the mutating nature of spyware, these programs are offered in a subscription basis so the program can be kept up to date on the new forms of spyware and how to fight them. These programs are often part of the same software package as anti-virus programs and are widely available.
